Transition Man and Friends Success Series Talk with James Malinchak
By Liam Martin
"The Art of Networking"
Part 1 of 8
Johnny: Hello and welcome to your next installation of Transition Man and Friends. Today I'm with James Malinchak a Professional Networker Master Speaker. Hello James.
James: Hey Johnny. How are you my friend?
Johnny: Oh, I'm doing well. Today, James is here with us and we're going to talk about the art of networking and the importance of networking and how networking can improve you personal relationships with others as well as business relationships with others. James, I'm sitting here with the book you authored here, How To Be A Master Networker. Why don't you tell me James and tell my listeners as well why did you write a book about Master Networking?
James: First of all Johnny thanks for having me on the call, I really appreciate it and I appreciate you giving me the opportunity of trying to impact your listeners. I think the next forty minutes or so will definitely change their lives and hopefully bring them a lot more business for those who are looking for business. The reason I wanted to write that book and I didn't just want to write a book on networking, I wanted to write the best book on networking, the definitive guide.
Johnny: All right.
James: The reason why I wanted to do that is because of a couple of reasons. Number one: most people have no idea how to network. We think we do because its sounds so simple. We think we know how to network. Oh, I just got to go meet people and talk to people. Just because you meet people and talk to people that is one of the biggest misconceptions about networking. That does not mean you're networking.
Johnny: Ok
James: Because its not leading to something.
Johnny: Right
James: My whole point for doing the book and the reason I do networking talks is to teach people how to network, but get it to lead to something that could pay off for them down the line.
James: Tell me a number of the things, because you've learned this art of networking, tell me a number of the successes that you have had in relationship to your networking abilities.
Johnny: Basically how I came across the importance of starting to network is when I started out as a sales representative, I was a stockbroker for a major Wall Street Investment Firm and they teach you in Sales 101 that if you make a hundred cold calls a day you will get ten people who are interested and out of those ten who are interested one will eventually turn into a customer and client. I started thinking a hundred calls a day that is crazy. I then knew why stockbrokers jumped out of windows.
Johnny: Right
James: I said I am not doing that. I said you know what, I am going to tap into the people that I used to play sports with who are now playing professional sports. I played high school and college basketball and these people were in the NBA and some in the NFL and I said let me tap into this network, if you will, and let me see if I can start getting these people to invest their money with me.
Johnny: Right
James: I figured they knew me, second they liked me and third they trusted me so why wouldn't they want me, their friend, to help them. What took place was I began to network with a number of these people and a number of these people began referring me to their friends since birds of a feather flock together.
Johnny: Right
James: Then I said, allow me to find out if I could get out there and I can begin networking with brand new prospects because I don't want to do this cold calling thing. Let me find out if I could use these same ideas that I actually sat down for several weeks and thought of these ideas and strategies on how to get myself in with people of high net worth and who are celebrities, if you will. Let me find out if I could get myself a set of strategies that will get me in with anybody, anytime and anywhere. I mean they work if you just want to build personal friendships. They work if you want to get business clients. Some of the people over the years that I've gotten myself into to meet and talk with have been former First Lady Hillary Clinton.
Johnny: Wow
James: Now she is Senator Hillary Clinton.
Johnny: She can be President one day.
James: She could be President one day. I got myself into talk with her at a function where there was a speech being given and then I got into a private function and signed a book for her daughter.
