James Malinchak's Failure Leads To Success
By Troy Dickson
"Failure is good. It's fertilizer. Everything I have learned about coaching I have learned from making mistakes." -Rick Pitino, head basketball coach, University of Kentucky 1996 NCAA National Champions
There's a chance you might fail while trying to achieve your dreams. You should be aware of this fact of life. No one said success is going to be easy. The important thing is that you never quit or give up when you fail. Realistically, failure is not failure unless you stop in your tracks and give up your dreams. Whenever you strive for what you want, and you miss your target mark, it's only a failure of that attempt. It's not saying you are a failure.
Successful people aren't afraid to fail. Successful people understand that they are taking a risk and that in taking that educated gamble they might lose. However, they are aware that failure is a great teacher. From failure, you learn what you did wrong or what you could have done better to succeed. Failure is a part of trying. I'd rather fail trying to accomplish something than not even try at all. Don't quit when confronted with failure, you might be closer to succeeding than you think.
"Persistence is the ability to face defeat over and over without giving up - to push on in the face of great difficulty, knowing that victory can be yours." -Unknown
A number of the world's most successful people failed. For instance, Thomas Edison failed around 2,000 times before finally inventing the light bulb. Instead of getting discouraged and quitting when he had an unsuccessful attempt, he'd simply say that he was one step closer to finding the proper procedure. Lots of his creations and accomplishments were advancements based on other people's invented failures. Edison kept trying, even without a formal education until he succeeded. He didn't let failure hold him back and he even made personal progress by learning from other's failures.
As another example, Abraham Lincoln lost approximately eight elections before becoming President of the United States. Although he continued to lose elections, he never quit pursuing his dreams. During all these attempts, he and his wife struggled with family issues as her parents disowned her over his beliefs in freeing the slaves. If that was not stressful enough, Lincoln's loss of a child seriously affected his wife to the point of despair and depression. Yet, he pursued his dreams and eventually became one of the most significant President's to date.
As you can see, outstanding accomplishments rarely occur on the first try. You will fail. It is just a part of life. The way to overcome failure is to, first, realize that it happens, then learn from it. Failure will teach you valuable lessons about succeeding. Then, when you finally reach success, you will be so much more knowledgeable and ready for your next adventure.
"You don't learn, evolve, become more of a human being by winning Oscars, making money, and residing in Malibu. You learn by disappointments." -Jodie Foster, Actress
