Loss Prevention Suggestions For Small Business Owners

By Mark Mahaffey

Are you aware of the fact that millions of dollars are lost each year by business owners to theft? This means that thousands of business owners are losing hard earned money. If you would like to avoid being found in that unfortunate number, you should consider studying shoplifting and learning how to prevent it.

Even if you have not experienced theft yet, you have no reason to think that it can never happen to you. It can. One of the best things you can do is learn about the traits and characteristics of shoplifters. Spending time learning about this may make the difference between being the victim of crime or stopping it before it happens.

For example, people in your store who are thinking about stealing from you may act in specific ways. They may have a guilty look about them. They may absentmindedly pick up objects and put them back down.

You may also notice someone making repeated trips inside your store. Sometimes, thieves will come in often, so that they can get a good look at your store, get to know the habits and patterns of employees and decide on the best plan to take when they are ready to do their shoplifting.

Here is something to try to protect yourself from shoplifting: have a designated dressing room worker. It is easy to steal things while in dressing rooms. You see, a person can hide things in their purses, bags or even in their own clothing.

Hire someone to work the dressing room by counting the number of items each customer takes into and brings out of the dressing rooms. The best way to do this is by assigning tags with numbers on them to each customer. If a customer takes 3 items into the dressing room, give them a tag with the number 3 on it. When they come out, you will have an easy way to remember how many items they took in with them.
